Overview

For years, tire warranty adjustments in Walmart Auto Care Centers relied on a combination of paper records, service history searches, manager approvals, and technician experience. Experienced associates generally knew how to work through the process, but every adjustment began with an investigation.

Technicians often needed to locate historical purchase records, determine what coverage existed, verify whether a specific tire qualified, calculate any applicable adjustment, and document the result.

Depending on the situation, that information could be spread across service records, PDFs, printed invoices, customer recollection, and policy documentation. Business leadership wanted to modernize the process with a digital solution.

The challenge

When I began researching how stores handled warranty adjustments, I expected to find a cumbersome but well-defined process. Instead, I found a process largely powered by expertise.

Experienced associates understood warranty adjustments. The challenge was gathering the information necessary to make a decision. Some associates could navigate the process quickly from memory. Others relied more heavily on documentation or assistance from coworkers.

Regardless of experience level, everyone was ultimately pulling information together from multiple sources before they could determine what coverage applied.

I frequently found myself asking questions and watching experienced technicians collectively work through how they would explain a process they had internalized years earlier.

Most of the effort went into reconstructing the context needed to make the adjustment.

Information required to evaluate a warranty

  • Historical tire purchases
  • Warranty coverage types
  • DOT records
  • Service history
  • Tire positions
  • Tread measurements
  • Mileage records
  • Manager approvals
  • Customer-provided documentation

The outcome

The solution was deployed chainwide and became the primary digital workflow for warranty verification and adjustment across Walmart Auto Care Centers, replacing paper records, manual calculations, and hunting through service history.
